As we draw near the special occasion, it is worthwhile to stop and think about the lessons gained by being a father. Truly, it is a transformative experience that shapes one’s perspectives. More than a milestone in life – fatherhood imparts invaluable lessons that extend beyond the aspect of parenting. Many of these gems of wisdom can be applied to other aspects of life, including leadership and investing.
Here’s how the lessons gained from fatherhood can guide one to become a better leader and investor:
Patience and Thinking Long-Term:
Parenthood often demands one to gain the ability to handle unexpected situations that require quick thinking. This skill translates well into leadership and investing, where the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and recalibrate strategies is vital. Being flexible allows you to navigate through challenges and seize opportunities that arise.
Adaptability and Flexibility:
Compared to lump sum investing, which requires a big amount of capital to be paid upfront, spreading out a fixed amount over a fixed duration can help reduce the impact of market volatility on an investment portfolio.
Empathy and Understanding:
As a loving father, you strive to understand with your child’s needs, emotions and views. This trait of empathy can be valuable in leadership, as it helps you connect with your team members. In investing, empathy allows you to consider the broader context and various factors that influence the market, helping you make more informed decisions.
Guidance and Mentorship:
Fathers make concerted efforts to guide and mentor their child. In leadership, providing guidance and mentorship to your team members fosters their development and creates a positive work environment. Similarly, as an investor, sharing your knowledge and expertise with others can be beneficial.
Balancing Priorities:
Juggling various responsibilities and priorities is a common challenge for fathers. This skill translates well into leadership, where you need to balance the needs of your team, organisation and stakeholders. To be a savvy investor, finding a balance between risk, diversification and asset allocation is vital.
Keep Learning:
Fatherhood is a constant learning experience, where you grow alongside your child. Embracing a growth mindset when it comes to being a leader or an investor will allow you to remain competitive, by adapting to new trends and constantly picking up new skills and know-how.
While the lessons from fatherhood can put you in good stead, it is important to adapt and apply them to the specific contexts of leadership and investing. To find out more, I will be happy to share my journey. And last but not least, Happy Father’s Day!
